![]() Patinas Explained Patination is a natural chemical process that takes place when metal is exposed to the elements. An ancient bronze coin from the Han Dynasty acquires, over thousands of years, a deep sea-green patina. A bombed out ‘72 Plymouth Duster turns to rust. All things man-made, no matter how beautiful or valuable, return to the Earth.
The chosen medium of Runfola Studios is patination. Through the application of acids, we accelerate and control the natural oxidation, or aging, of metals. The result is coloration as varied and complex as an aerial landscape. Unlike paint, patinas do not mask the underlying material. Runfola Studios reveals, through patination, the organic flowing qualities of base metals.
Once cured and sealed, our colorations are safe, stable, and sufficiently durable for both indoor and outdoor applications. To see high resolution images of our patina colorways, click here. |
